Fall is one of the best times of year to capture a great photo of your pup.
Here are a few tips to get the shot!
Find good lighting
Overcast days or the softer light in the morning and late afternoon can help avoid harsh shadows. If it’s sunny, try finding a shady spot with colorful leaves in the background. Shooting at golden hour can make a striking photo, but avoid putting your dog directly in the light as they will most likely squint their eyes while your trying to take their photo.
Pick a simple background
Look for a wooded trail, field, pumpkin patch, or even just a pile of colorful leaves. Make sure the background isn't too busy so your dog stays the focus. If you’re having trouble with a busier background, use something like Portrait Mode on your phone’s camera or use a photo editing app like Lightroom to slightly blur the background, putting your dog as the main focus.
Get down to their level
Instead of taking photos from above, crouch down or sit on the ground. Getting closer to your dog's eye level makes the photo feel more personal and engaging, and it will be easier to get them to look directly at the camera.
Use treats or a favorite toy
Speaking of getting your dog to look at the camera, try holding a treat or toy just above your camera to get your dog's attention. If your dog knows a few tricks, try a sit, down, or stay for a more visually interesting photo.
Take lots of pictures!
Dogs move fast, so don't worry about getting the perfect shot on the first try. Take several photos in a row and you're much more likely to catch that perfect expression.
Most importantly, let your dog have fun! The best fall photos aren't always the most posed ones. A happy, goofy pup showing their true personality surrounded by colorful leaves can make the perfect picture.
