Dogs in halloween costumes are simply adorable, but not every dog is immediately comfortable wearing one. A little preparation can make wearing a costume much more fun for everyone!

Start early

Let your dog see and sniff the costume before putting it on. Reward them with treats and praise so they begin to associate it with something positive. Avoid holding it over their head, holding it up to them and cornering them, or putting it on them right away.

Keep the first try-on short

Put the costume on for just a few seconds, then gradually increase the amount of time your dog wears it. Give plenty of treats and praise your dog heavily. Make costume time fun and short, then try again later.

Practice moving around

Costumes can feel weird to your dog when they walk, sit, or lay down. Let them practice moving around in their costume and encourage them with treats to move around and get more comfortable in their costume.

At the same time, check the fit. Make sure your dog can walk, sit, breathe, see, and move normally. Avoid anything tight around the neck or anything that could restrict movement.

Watch their body language

If your dog seems stressed, freezes, repeatedly tries to remove the costume, or shows other signs of discomfort, take it off and try again later. Not every dog enjoys wearing a costume, and that's okay!

Final Thoughts

With a little patience and plenty of yummy treats, your pup will be ready to celebrate Halloween in style!
