Who says a practical haircut has to be boring? You can give your dog a unique, stylish look without choosing a length that requires hours of brushing every day.

Here are three fun ideas based on different coat types:

Doodle: The Modern Teddy Bear

Keep the body at a manageable length, around ½ to ¾ inches, but leave the head and ears slightly fuller and shape the face into a rounded teddy-bear silhouette. Tell your groomer you want your pup’s body a little shorter and their legs a little longer for a soft, elevated look.

Keeping the legs a little longer will keep your pup’s haircut looking fluffy and distinctive without keeping the entire body long and difficult to maintain.

Here’s an example of this haircut by our Salon Manager Ashley!

Poodle: The Lamb Cut

Take inspiration from the classic poodle without committing to a full show trim. Keep the body and shorter, legs a little longer, while leaving a fuller head and tail. A clean face and feet give the style that unmistakable poodle look.

It's eye-catching, but the overall coat length stays much easier to maintain than a fully grown-out show coat.

Drop Coat: Simple Modern Trim

For a drop-coated breed such as a Shih Tzu or Maltese, try a rounded, sculpted silhouette with a shorter body and fuller, rounded ears and head. Keep the body short enough to brush easily while using the face and ears to create the personality of the haircut.

The shorter body helps prevent everyday tangles, while the fuller head gives the cut a completely different look from a traditional all-over trim.

The secret to a great low-maintenance cut?

Put the personality in the shape, not the length.

Interesting ears, a sculpted head, rounded feet, a fuller tail, or intentional furnishings can completely change the look of a haircut without leaving the entire coat long and high-maintenance.

Bring your groomer a photo of the shape you like and talk about how much maintenance you're realistically willing to do at home. Your dog can have a seriously fun haircut without signing you up for a full-time brushing job.
